Cover 12" Front

On The Wire was released in October 1984 on the B-side of the 12" Walk Away single.

This song was, however, never performed live in this version.

From 1993 on, it was combined with the Leonard Cohen song Teachers

to form an impressive medley of On The Wire / Teachers / On The Wire,

as which it was last performed live on February 12th at Powerstation, Auckland, New Zealand

during The Sisters of Mercy's 30th Stage Anniversary Tour in 2011/2012

Please check below for a video of a version from the same tour.

Some interesting statistical facts about this song are also available @The Sisters of Mercy Database v0.5 Beta.

On The Wire

Now the ground comes up too fast
Too fast to meet you
In clouds of dust erupting
Thick around your feet, be careful
In the rubble in shrouds in waiting
Wall to wall to where you tread
Now the quick and the dead and the same old
Fates come calling cards away
How do you think it came to pass you
By the hard way by desire
How do you think it came to pass you by?

I don't sleep so I don't dream so I don't
Wake up frightened
Everything is what it seems if
You look deep enough tonight and
See ...

On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not fall
On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not fall
On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not fall
On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not fall
On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not fall
On the wire, on the wire, on the wire I will not ....
